Car Hire Wembley
Located in the north west of London, in the borough of Brent, is the suburb of Wembley. By car hire, it is located 8 miles from Charing Cross, and is home to the Wembley Stadium and the Wembley Arena, which is the largest surviving building from the British Empire Exhibition, held in 1924. The exhibition was what’s called a colonial exhibition, which meant it was designed to boost trade and support for the colonies of the British Empire.
It was opened by King George V, on Saint George’s Day, and only two of the 58 British countries of the time were absent. The three main buildings were the palaces of Engineering, Art and industry. The Palace of Engineering was the world’s largest reinforced concrete building. The buildings were to be demolished, but the Empire Pool survived to become the Wembley Arena, and Wembley Stadium was kept until it was taken down in 2002 to build a new ‘home of English football’. Drive to the stadium and arena in your car hire and wander around, admiring the architectural masterpieces.
Wembley Stadium has the second largest capacity in Europe, seating 90,000 people. It is also the largest stadium in the world that has the ability to put every seat under cover.
The Empire Pool was last used in the 1948 Summer Olympics. The arena is now the busiest music venue in London, and the second busiest in the United Kingdom. It re-opened in 2006, and features a ‘Square of Fame’, much like the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Performers who feature at the arena are asked if they would like their name added to the walk – the first was Madonna, and then Cliff Richard and two band members of Status Quo. Wembley is well serviced by five underground and five above ground rail stations.
