Van Hire Sheffield

A long time ago lay a field on the River Sheaf. As a city grew up it became known as Sheffield. Famous in the 1800s for making steel, Sheffield has the eighth largest population of any city outside London.

Founded in 1176, if not earlier, there are many rumours surround its dedication, with one suggesting that the founder was implicated in the murder of Saint Thomas Beckett, and built the abbey to assuage his guilt. This has been disputed, though, by one of the members of the family who inherited the abbey after its dissolution in 1537.

Only the western tower remains of the original abbey, and this is attached to a chapel (now a church) that was built in the 1600s. Most of the old estate is now golf courses, and there is some ancient woodland remaining. Sheffield boasts the largest theatre complex outside London, with the Lyceum and Crucible Theatres, together with the Studio Theatre.
