Travel to Trafford Park in your van hire and you'll find not only the largest industrial estate in Europe but the Trafford Centre, the largest centre of its kind in Europe – known affectionately as 'the Temple to Consumerism' due to its vast array of shops, set out on 300 acres and featuring (are you sitting down?) a dining hall with its own street dedicated to Chinese restaurants.

The construction and architecture of the centre itself is a feat – it took 27 months to build, at a cost of 600 million pounds, and employing over 3000 workers. It covers an area equivalent to 30 football pitches, can accommodate 10,000 cars (65 of these are for disabled drivers) and 300 buses in its (free!) undercover parking – so there is no problem trying to find a place to park your van hire. It is monitored by 350 CCTVs. The glass dome in the middle of the centre is 2/3 the size of that in Saint Paul's Cathedral.

Children over two can be looked after in the on-site crèche, and the play centre can hold 100 children (and you can also obtain security passes for parents and children).
