Car Hire Harrogate
Harrogate is located in the shire of North Yorkshire, in the district of Harrogate. It used to be two little villages, High and Low Harrogate) but when the waters in the villages were discovered to be high in iron and sulphur, the villages grew to be very popular and the spa town of Harrogate was born. William Slingsby discovered the first mineral spring in 1571, and found that the water from the Tewit Well was remarkably similar to a well in the Belgium town of Spa, and a book published in 1626 outlined the benefits of water from wells such as these.
Hence the popularity of the town. Nowadays the site of the Tewit Well is marked by a dome, and is located within an area of open parkland known as the Stray. The Harrogate Stray was established by an act of Parliament in 1778, which fixed the size of the land, and it is a 200 acre stretch through town. It must always remain 200 acres, and if land is taken from it, it must be replaced elsewhere. Use your car hire to get there, and take a stroll in the park, perhaps a picnic.
The only surviving Kursaal in Britain, the Royal Hall Theatre, is found in Harrogate. This grade II listed building had restoration work commenced in 2006, and really must be seen on any visit to the city. Betty’s Tea Rooms are also located in Harrogate, and are owned by Bettys and Taylors of Harrogate. Get there by car hire and take tea in the premises, said to contain over 50 teapots lining the walls. The Great Yorkshire Show is held annually in Harrogate – this agricultural show has been held since 1838, and has been held in the Great Yorkshire Showground since 1951. Use your car hire to get your goodies home!
